“Your brother’s home really does feel like a refuge,” Charlotte said as she and Wade crossed the threshold of the Riverside Inn.

“Yeah, well, for the time being, let’s not take safety for granted. Not even here.” Wade turned and gave the parking area a quick visual scan before closing the door and engaging the heavy-duty lock. “Paul Boutin won’t get paid until you’re dead, so he’s not going to quit coming after you. Aside from earning his pay, he’s got a reputation to defend.”

Charlotte drew in a deep breath and tried to settle her nerves. The shooting was the third time she’d been targeted for attack in just as many days. She was fairly certain her sister was in debt to some very dangerous men. And it was possible that Dinah had set things up to make it look like Charlotte had stolen money from the resort.

Happy barks and the sound of dog toenails tapping on the wooden floor greeted them as the resident canines bounded out of the first-floor office and hurried over to offer a boisterous welcome. That helped to lift Charlotte’s spirits a little.

After the animals were settled down, she heard Maribel’s voice coming from the office. She wore an earpiece and apparently spoke to someone on the phone while pacing in front of an open laptop on Connor’s oversize desk. “I just found out that Miller has an ex-wife in that area. I’m texting you her address right now.”

“Your mom is on the phone with Connor and Danny.” A female voice came from the living room.

A woman with reddish-blond hair—who looked a lot like Danny Ryan—got up from one of the deep cushioned sofas, lifting an elderly-looking black cat from her lap as she stood. “The guys were going to help you out tonight if you got a call from your informant, but then they got a call on their own case and had to take off to hopefully catch their fugitive. So you’ve got me instead.” She offered Charlotte a bright smile. “Jack would have come, too, but he got a call from Milo and Katherine requesting an assist, so of course he had to respond to that. The way things are going, maybe everybody will catch their fugitives today.”

“That would be fantastic,” Charlotte said.

“I’m Hayley Ryan Colter.” She offered Charlotte another smile. “I understand you could use some help right now.”

Charlotte nodded. “Yes. Thank you.”

Hayley’s smile settled into a more serious expression. “I know it can be horrifying to have someone trying to kill you. I really know. I’ve had it happen to me. At times it can look like they have the upper hand, that they have an insurmountable advantage because they skulk in the shadows and repeatedly take you by surprise. But most of them aren’t as brilliant as they believe they are. And they can’t skulk forever. When the pressure of trying to evade the cops—and us—gets them tired, they start to make mistakes.”

“Most of them. You said most of them aren’t so brilliant.
